Nestled in the heart of Capitol Hill’s historic Volunteer Park neighborhood, this 1901 home presented an exciting opportunity to partner once again with returning clients as they made their new home their own. The remodel thoughtfully reimagined the kitchen and entryway, preserving the home’s architectural character while introducing functionality tailored to the family’s daily life. By incorporating a portion of the covered exterior porch into the home, we transformed an underutilized seating nook into a dedicated mudroom with custom storage, creating a more practical and welcoming entry.

In the kitchen, custom face-frame cabinetry with inset fronts brings new life to the space while honoring the home’s historic character. A new island with bar seating anchors the room, while a full-height apothecary-style display cabinet adds a distinctive architectural detail. Existing cabinetry at the beverage station and pantry was refreshed to create a cohesive design throughout. A thoughtful combination of marble and wood countertops, warm brass accents, and reclaimed fir flooring that complements the original fir throughout the main floor adds richness and character. The result is a considered balance of old and new, where modern functionality and timeless craftsmanship feel right at home.

Capitol Hill kitchen looking toward the walnut island and window wall, with navy cabinets, marble counters, and fir floors

Reclaimed fir flooring was installed to connect the renovated kitchen with the original fir found throughout the main floor. Salvaged boards sourced from multiple sites were carefully installed and refinished to create a cohesive appearance while preserving the variation, patina, and character that speak to the material’s age. The reclaimed fir grounds the space in the history of the home, adding warmth and depth while providing a rich, understated foundation for the new cabinetry.

Custom cabinetry transformed the mudroom into a highly functional space that balances efficiency with character. Thoughtfully designed around the existing windows, the cabinetry preserves natural light while maximizing storage in this high-traffic area. A walnut bench top introduces warmth and provides a practical place to sit, while brass hardware ties the mudroom back to the finishes and character of the adjoining kitchen.
