Our clients came to us with a goal of creating a more open and connected space within the existing footprint of their home. The original kitchen was small, dark, and closed off from the rest of the house, limiting the flow between spaces, while the adjacent dining room was underutilized. By removing the wall between the kitchen and dining room, we were able to expand the kitchen and create a natural connection to the living room, bringing two of the home’s central gathering spaces together. New skylights bring an abundance of natural light into the newly opened kitchen, complementing the warm, layered material palette. Custom cabinetry in a soft cream creates a light and timeless backdrop, while a rich wood island adds warmth and contrast. Terracotta-look subway tile laid in a herringbone pattern adds texture and character, tying the kitchen together with the warmth of the refinished wood floors. The result is a kitchen that feels inviting and considered, with significantly more work surface and storage for everyday family life.
We also looked beyond the kitchen to find opportunities to make better use of the home’s existing footprint. By capturing underutilized space in the primary bedroom, we created a foundation for a future ensuite, while a new dedicated entrance to the garage eliminated the need to pass through the bedroom. Relocating the washer and dryer to the garage opened up additional space in the kitchen and eased the hallway bottleneck. Together, these changes allowed us to improve the way the home functions without expanding its footprint, creating a home that feels brighter, more open, and better connected while remaining thoughtfully suited to how our clients live.
